Athena on the other hand represents the woman who became the father's daughter to survive the world. She is the conscious parts of ourselves that continue to punish the embodied feminine potentiating within us through negative self-talk, criticism and comparison. Poseidon, god of the sea, is representative of the force with which we feel the effects of patriarchy, as women, in an embodied, earthy sense as all as in a watery, emotional, soulful way. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePharmakon calls on us to reclaim our conscious faculties, that of wisdom and authority, by facing the monstrous parts of ourselves. This oil allows us to hold ourselves tenderly as we begin to integrate our bodies with our minds, to see ourselves as whole and worthy in our own right. As she starts feeling Apollo's breath on her shoulder, she desperately calls out to her father, the river god Peneus, pleading with him to save her from a fate she does not choose. Peneus compassionately aids his daughter by turning her into a laurel tree, the first laurel. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnconditional self-love and acceptance are what we all deserve, especially when life feels overwhelming, unpredictable and relentless (read: patriarchal). This mythology reminds us that agency and autonomy are made accessible when we treat ourselves with compassion. When we are inevitably forced to make, or are compelled to accept, hard things many of us get harsher with ourselves. The inner critic rages and makes us second guess what we know is right. Daphne shows us that unconditional love and acceptance of our fates is transformative. Through her radical autonomy, Daphne shows us that we create ourselves and in so doing define what we value.
