When Demeter lost her daughter to the underworld, not knowing anything of her whereabouts Demeter's heart shattered. In her darkest hour, it was Hecate that guided Demeter on the path back to reunion. With her torches held aloft, Hecate illuminated the path from despair to enlightenment by pointing her in the direction of Helios. The sun god made Demeter aware of what happened and it was by this small act that Demeter was able to take action to effect change in the situation and ultimately reunite with her daughter.

As guide of souls, Hecate mediates between what is conscious and unconscious. The unconscious speaks to us every night in our dreams via the symbolic language. The meaning of our dreams isn't always immediately clear, leaving us intrigued but confused. This myth reminds us to seek the psychopomp, the torchbearer within, to help us shed light on what our unconscious is trying to communicate about our lives. With her help, we can find our way back to our souls, the seat of wisdom. 

The Practical

This oil is scented with an essential blend meant to help us relax and calm the mind. Used before sleep, it can help us set an intention with which to meet the unconscious. The psychopomp isn't present just in our dreams, we are free to call upon her in active imaginations, meditation, and other visualization practices to gain deeper insight. We'll have to work to decipher their meaning, but the felt-sense impression symbols impose upon us will initiate us into a deep relationship with Self.
